Build capability to create and maintain key data infrastructure
Want to train new talent and reskill existing employees with one of the most in-demand technical skillsets? Develop key internal capabilities to raise the usability of critical datasets in your organisation. Cambridge Spark's Level 5 Data Engineer Apprenticeship equips learners with core technical and leadership skills.
In turn, learners are able to support business functions in creating and maintaining data analytics pipelines. They build the skillset to access data in their organisation and gain an understanding of the data engineering lifecycle, data modelling and more to help organisations maximise the value of their data.
Leaners will also have the opportunity to join guest talks on technical updates from leading technology providers like Google Cloud Platform and Databricks.

What will I learn?
Our curriculum is developed by our leading faculty, composed of data scientists in leading industry positions and academics from some of the top universities in the world.
We take a modular approach to how we offer our curriculum. This course includes all of the below modules with each module being a mix of e-learning content, such as Jupyter notebooks and instructional videos, as well as live workshops.
We continuously update the modules and reiterate to incorporate the latest skills.
Detailed Curriculum
Get a refresher on the foundations of understanding LLMs, including concepts like tokenisation, embeddings, Transformers and the Attention mechanism.
Concepts:
- NLP basics refresher – including tokenisation and embeddings
- History of Language Models – the evolution from rule-based models to modern deep learning.
- The Attention Mechanism – the theory behind Attention.
The temptation is to always reach for the biggest hammer in the toolbox. But if your task is specific enough, smaller and more niche models might be useful.
Concepts:
- An introduction to Hugging Face – including loading models and tokenizers, generation and datasets.
- Overview of BERT (and his relatives) – architecture overview, variants and use cases.
How are LLMs different from other LMs, and what makes them ‘large’? This module gives an overview of working with LLMs, introduces the OpenAI API standard, and gives an overview of OpenAI’s offerings.
Concepts:
- Introduction to LLMs – includes an overview of popular LLMs today, and different approaches to “openness”.
- Prompt engineering and the basic approach to working with LLMs – including prompting techniques like few-shot prompting, and Chain-of-Thought prompting for example.
-
OpenAI – introduction to the OpenAI API standard, and an overview of OpenAI models and methods.
Hands-on Project #1: Getting your LLM to adhere to a certain style
Hands-on Project #2: Concept drift and working with customer reviews
An introduction to important libraries you’ll likely use when building with LLMs: LangChain, LlamaIndex and Pydantic.
Concepts:
- LangChain and LlamaIndex – an overview of both frameworks, their advantages, and concepts like runnables and chains.
- Pydantic – an overview of Pydantic, and concepts like generating schemas, and chaining multiple LLMs.
Hands-on Project #1: Chaining multiple LLMs to produce more complicated outputs.
Hands-on Project #2: Prompt adherence safety measures
