An interview with Applied Data Science Bootcamp graduate, Amanda Borg, on her journey of landing a new job as an Insights Analyst, as a result of the bootcamp.
What were you doing before you enrolled in the bootcamp?
I was a Graduate Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover.
What challenges or friction did you encounter with your existing skillset?
I was interested in moving into Data Science after one of my placements on the graduate scheme where I was building an AI assistant for transportation navigations systems. Even though I had previously studied AI and Machine Learning courses at university, I still had large gaps in knowledge and was looking to fill in these gaps with a more comprehensive and practical course.
In addition, the course is taught by people from top universities so the odds of it being taught well were good and I knew that being in a classroom environment would provide me with great networking opportunities."
Why did you choose Cambridge Spark as your learning provider?
I chose Cambridge Spark because it is taught in person over a number of months as opposed to a couple of weeks online, I needed a course that was going to go beyond what I had already covered in theory and I was really looking to learn how I can apply Data Science methods in a more practical way which is required to fulfil a job in Data Science.

What did you enjoy most about the bootcamp?
There were many things that I enjoyed about the bootcamp such as the projects, the dinner events in Cambridge and that the level of the course was set just right for me to enjoy learning.
I most enjoyed getting to know the lecturers and the people on the course, it really helped when I was stuck on something, I had people around that I could ask and a few of us formed a study group to work on the coursework together which I found very beneficial.
How would you sum up your overall experience of Cambridge Spark?
Overall, I had a really great experience with Cambridge Spark, the course was taught very well and I learned a lot of relevant practical skills that I have already utilised in my new role, which I landed thanks to having done this course.
What advice would you give for those considering the bootcamp?
There were so many people from all backgrounds on this course and everyone had their own strengths and weaknesses.
I was there to enter the field of Data Science, there were people who were already in the field and looking to refresh their skill set, there were people who were managing a team of Data Scientists who were looking to have a deeper understanding of the role of a Data Scientist and the day to day challenges that they face and there were people who were looking for a career change and wanted to find out if Data Science is a path they would enjoy going down.
My advice to those who are considering the bootcamp is if any of the above apply to you, it's so worth it!
In all honesty, I probably wouldn't have even got the chance to interview had I not studied Data Science with Cambridge Spark."
What are you doing now? How did Cambridge Spark help?
I have recently started a new job at Babylon Health as an Insights Analyst in the Business Intelligence team with a fast-track to Data Scientist. In all honesty, I probably wouldn't have even got the chance to interview had I not studied Data Science with Cambridge Spark.
What does the future hold for your career?
That's a great question, only time will tell! I'm shooting for Data Scientist for now.
Could you sum up your perspective on the data science field?
The data science industry is booming at the moment and teams of data scientists are growing in almost every industry, which is great if you like learning about different industries and it also means that job and business opportunities are widespread.
